Wireless Power in Popular Media

Posted on June 25, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

Here is an article from several years ago that talks about the future of wireless power transfer, with a few GT quotes sprinkled in for good measure.  A quote about our ECE senior design students:

“Wireless power could enable a whole new class of devices,” says Durgin. Those devices will include sensors on all the mechanics of a home, business or factory; detectors for heat, light and motion; and cameras and controls that we can move and upgrade at our convenience, without ever having to touch the building’s wiring. These controls will include “peel and stick” light switches and thermostats, which are already a common senior design project among Professor Durgin’s students.

UW Invited Talk on Low-Powered Microwave Backscatter — 2010!

The University of Washington EE Department hosts the Lytle Lecture series, dating back quite a ways.  In addition to the recent lecture by Prof. Durgin, this series has — over the last decade — hosted numerous talks about how low-powered communications and energy-harvesting technology have changed over the years.  Here is an example by a visiting Associate Professor in 2010.  (Thanks to my friend, Prof. Denise Wilson, for the invitation.)

For those regular visitors to the site, here is an older talk by lab friend Prof. Matt Reynolds at University of Washington on Wireless Power Transfer.  Prof. Reynolds has been a pioneer in this field for some time, with several past and present start-ups in the area of RFID, wireless power transfer, and RF imaging.

Panel Discussion on the Future of RFID

Posted on May 21, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin Leave a Comment

Below is a video recording of the IEEE RFID 2018 panel session, “The Past, Present, and Future of RFID”.  Prof. Sanjay Sarma moderates as Prof. Matt Reynolds, Dr. Paul Muller, and Prof. Greg Durgin provide commentary.  Interesting questions include:

  • What are some of the interesting future applications ?
  • What are the biggest disappointments with RFID?
  • What would you like to see in a “Gen 3” RFID tag?
